Urban Legends...

Take the Urban Legend Quiz

I love urban legends. I think they are easy to spot. As a rule - the more detail, the better the chance that it is a load of crap. When I get a juicy one, I just love it.

On the other hand...if one more person (however good intentioned) sends me one more "virus alert", I'm going to scream. I'm an internet professional (not just a surfer, but an application programmer). I keep up on these things. My computers are guarded like Fort Knox. I have never - NEVER - received word of a legitimate virus in an email forwarded from your Auntie Em. Norton (symantec) and McAfee both offer alerts. Their websites offer up-to-the-minute breaking news and update downloads.

There are some other Internet urban legends that have been around for years. Bill Gates is NOT going to share his wealth if you forward emails. There is nothing that tracks forwarded emails. This goes for Applebee's too. Poor Applebee's. They even had to post something on their website that they are NOT behind the emails promising free stuff if you forward the emails.

How many urban legend emails have you fallen for? Check out the hoaxes here .

Back in the days when everyone and their mama had AOL, I used to get those giveaway emails all the time. I got the GAP ones on many occasions. Then for the longest time, no one I knew was stupid enough to fall for any of that anymore, but alas, someone sent me the Gap thing again a few months ago. Some people will never learn.
